WEEKLY WOKE DROP: Catching Up
I Was On Vacation
The best part of a vacation is the excitement and the planning. Time away from the daily grind, exploring and going on adventures to new places, is there anything better?
I have just returned from two weeks in Italy. Flew into Rome, then got on a cruise ship to visit multiple stops in Italy, then Croatia, followed by a couple of days in Venice.
Within the last few weeks, I have been on:
shuttles
taxis
planes
buses
trains
a TukTuk
an Alpine Coaster
a tram
boats
cars
…and have traveled multiple time zones. In fact, Italy was six hours ahead, so technically, I should be getting ready for dinner right now.
I believe there are two kinds of travel:
relaxation
adventure
When you go someplace new and want to explore, there is no time for rest, no time to relax. I am on the go from early morning until the evening. Which means when I come home, I am beyond tired and need time to recover. Today I want to lie on the couch and do nothing.
Unfortunately, that is not possible right now.
I’m playing catch-up on everything today. Including getting out a new Substack!
Here are a handful of photos from my phone:
In Florence. Must get back. Had the best gluten-free pizza here! Need to wander through the Uffizi Gallery and take more photos.
Private residence in Florence where we had lunch. Unfortunately, because I am gluten-free, my dessert was a single orange with a knife on a plate. Really. Just one little orange and a sharp knife.
Leaning Tower of Pisa! My knowledge of the structure came from an episode of Bewitched in which the Leaning Tower was straightened. We did not go up into the tower but walked around, trying to steer clear of the hundreds of people taking selfies and posing as if they were pushing the tower. You cannot escape it.
Then on to Pompeii, located outside of Naples. This was much larger than I had imagined. I’m going to warn you that I will be talking about the extreme heat from this point forward.
Though I wore cotton and linen, I was sweating more than ever. Being in Italy felt like walking on the surface of the sun.
It was blazing hot. The temperature was in the 90s with humidity.
More ruins from the volcano. This is the Herculaneum, a town buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Actually, more interesting than Pompeii.
